Michigan | Detroit Metro Area
Organization Description: InsideOut Detroit is a literary non-profit dedicated to transforming the lives of young people through written and spoken word. Through in-school, after-school, and community-based programs, young people have the opportunity to share their voice and express themselves creatively with the help of professional writers and poets.
Program Description:
InsideOut Detroit offers several literary opportunities for young people and adults. Some of their programs for youth include:
- After-School Program: The Citywide Poets program is an after-school program that provides teens ages 13-19 with weekly workshops on creative writing, publication, and performance. Through this program, teens build community, learn the power of their words, and engage in self-expression that supports their positive, healthy development. Young people also have the opportunity to meet writers and participate in open mics and poetry slams. Additionally, young people may apply to be a part of the InsideOut Youth Performance Troupe to receive coaching, mentorship, and performance opportunities throughout the state and region.
- In-School Program: The in-school writing program places professional Writers-in-Residence in elementary, middle, and high schools throughout Detroit, offering students an opportunity to participate in intensive writing workshops and have their work published in a literary journal.
