Cameras Replaced In-Person Checks at Ohio Youth Prison- The Columbus Dispatch
Executive Director Mary Ann Scali was interviewed by USA Today regarding conditions of confinement concerns at Ohio’s Indian River Juvenile Correctional Facility. Staffing shortages, extensive use of solitary confinement, and staff conducting rounds via video instead of in person are a just a few of the issues that have been reported by young people and their families.
From the Article: “Mary Ann Scali, director of The Gault Center, a national nonprofit focused on youth justice, said holding teens in solitary confinement “is just torture, plain and simple.” If Indian River cannot maintain enough staffing to provide mental health, education and security for incarcerated young people, Ohio could shut it down and invest in community-based services for them, Scali said.”
